Citizens as Sensors? Join the 4th Scope webinar on IoT

Smart cities are on the rise, with sensor networks tracking everything from air quality to traffic patterns. But here’s the big question: are these systems empowering citizens or just collecting their data?

On December 10th, 2024, we’re diving into this debate with Webinar #4 of the Future of Online Participation in Cities series: “Citizens as Sensors?”. This free, live-streamed event will bring together experts to discuss how the Internet of Things (IoT) can foster inclusive, democratic smart cities—and what happens if it doesn’t.

When and Where

📅 Date: December 10, 2024
Time: 11:00 AM (GMT-3) Brasília, Buenos Aires and 3:00 PM Central European Time
🎥 Where: Watch live on YouTube

No registration is required, but you can sign up for reminders and updates about this event and the broader research series.

What’s the Webinar About?

In smart cities, IoT sensors gather vast amounts of data to help governments plan and manage urban life. But how much of this process is shaped by citizens?

This webinar will explore:

  • Collaborative practices in IoT: How can these technologies involve citizens from the start?
  • Transparency in data usage: Are cities being clear about how they use the data they collect?
  • Risks of exclusion: What happens when citizens are left out of decision-making?

Meet the Experts

We’re bringing together an impressive lineup of thought leaders to tackle these questions:

  • Fernanda Campagnucci (Moderator): Postdoc researcher at the University of Münster and a practitioner with extensive experience in digital governance and open data projects.
  • Thomas Bartoschek: Postdoc researcher at the University of Münster and founder of the senseBox project, which uses citizen science to bridge technology and community.
  • Gisele Craveiro: Professor at USP and co-founder of Colab-USP, with deep expertise in political participation and open data initiatives.
  • Peter Sailer: Leader of the International Smart Cities Network at GIZ, promoting digital solutions that prioritize citizen-centered urban planning.
